The 2014 OnDemand 100 Top Private Companies

Published Wed, June 4, 2014

This year, the companies on the fifth annual AlwaysOn OnDemand 100 list are looking at a future bright with promise. Softeware-as-a-service is the new norm, and cloud infrastructure is stepping up to ensure applications are being delivered, used, and serviced securely and without interruption. The questions being asked by developers revolve around creating new applications and features, not convincing clients to accept the delivery method. Coupled with advances in the cloud, technology is moving away from the desktop and into a connected, global datasphere.

The AlwaysOn editorial team, along with partners at Norwest Venture Partners, Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, Anthem Venture Partners, New Enterprise Associates, InterWest Partners, Mohr Davidow Ventures, Google, Salesforce.com, Meritech, Rembrandt Venture Partners, Allegis Capital, Jafco Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners, Greylock Partners, KPMG, Morgan Stanley, and industry experts across the globe, went out into the entrepreneurial ecosystem to find the top 100 private companies that are building the future today, and pulling down the walls surrounding legacy attitudes.

Big Data Meets Its Match

As the Internet of Things continues to evolve and connect immense silos of data via emerging hardware and software solutions, the role of big data will finally come into its own. The true emergence of a connected datasphere can only happen if newly developed software can breach vertical data silos, making the information more viable and consolidated for analytical use.

The SaaS marketplace is awash in products claiming to tame big data and provide easy-to-use, yet robust, business solutions. While the data is certainly there, the maturity of the products and services capable of coping with it are competing for primacy. The OnDemand 100 winners in this category are ahead of the pack, with strong financial backing and heavy-duty technology packages.

To that end, the cloud continues to hybridize, with companies sharing resonsibility with service providers for storage, access, and software deployment. Security becomes an even more complex and challenging issue, as user identity and information authorization become critical to managing proprietary information in a way that allows ease of access, while still protecting it from unauthorized use.

And finally, as SaaS is all but the new norm, platform-as-a-service offerings are becoming even more critical in the cloud infrastructure arena. Currently the realm of high-end commercial software developers, the PaaS model is beginning to entice enterprise developers, who see the value in developing, deploying, and maintaining apps all in one, rich cloud-based environment. This year's cloud application platforms are continuing to add the tools needed for agile coding, testing, and deployment of applications in the cloud.

Expanding the Limits of Computing

This year's OnDemand 100 companies, like their predecessors, were selected based on a set of five criteria: innovation, market potential, commercialization, stakeholder value, and media buzz. The cloud infrastructure, SaaS, and on-demand innovation community has solidified its place in technology's futurure. As the limits of computer power expand and data resources become more accessible, opportunities for vibrant new businesses are opening up as quickly as the ideas are formed.

Congratulations to all the 2014 OnDemand 100 winners. These top venture capital-backed on-demand and SaaS companies are developing, maintaining, and deploying disruptive software and hardware solutions to technology users around the world. The cloud platforms and software services represented in this year's list have pushed technology into a brave new frontier, complete with interconnected devices, saavvy users, and limitless potential.

The winners of this competition will be honored at:
