Fresh off the controversy of my last post, "How To Source Deals from Silicon Valley's Gay Mafia", I've listened to the feedback and gathered up a nice plan of articles.
"Be a Beta Male" is my article about getting ahead in Silicon Valley by being a non alpha male. Sure I'm the alpha in a room of alphas, but when I'm in a room of betas, I'm a beta male. Think about it.
My daddy always told me, "People that are like each other tend to like each other."
There are three case studies where being a beta male worked really well.
The first was when Stanford Women in Business invited me to do the morning keynote for their "I Don't Know to CEO" conference. I decided to forgo my alpha male status amongst a room full of undergrad females. After all, what rising female needs to get mentored by an alpha male.
Instead, I maneuvered not only to be a beta male, but also to be further sandbagged down to gamma status. What I mean is that as the alpha keynote person, I became a gamma by offering to be everyone's personal assistant.
A rising female executive always is in control of powerful men. I offered to be in the employ of every person at the "I Don't Know to CEO" conference by giving out my (real) cell.
Also, instead of speaking and leaving, I stayed the whole conference to be their assistant. Speaking and then immediately leaving is normal to alpha males. I heard on the pro speaker circuit it's called "blow and go." In MY industry, blow and go is something else.
My theory is that speaking for 30 minutes, or doing a 50-minute morning keynote is BORING. Accepting a gamma or beta male position lets you activate your knowledge the entire length of the conference.
Well, that's the quick version, so you know what I do. Good luck doing what I do.

P.S. I know I promised three things and only gave you one... but hey, I'm a VC, and I just changed your deal :-)
